What’s with the bats?

That symbol you see on all our stuff? That’s called wu-fu. It’s a Chinese symbol deriving from the fact that the Chinese word for good luck and the Chinese word for bat have the same sound (fu). Wu is the word for five, and each of the five bats in the symbol represents one of the five elements (earth, air, fire, water, metal) as well as one of the five happinesses (health, wealth, long life, good luck, tranquility). The color red is the color of joy, and that symbol in the middle? That’s prosperity.

Lucky Bat BooksThus, we chose a symbol that offered what we want for ourselves and for everyone we work with – a grounded joyful life filled with multiple kinds of happiness.

(Sure, it might also have something to do with the fact that one of us used to be a wildlife biologist and loved working with bats and got this symbol tattooed on her arm, but that’s secondary.)
